I’ve been working on revamping our family website. You can see the current web site on the blogroll on the right. The current one is a bit unorganized. I looked at several different GNU packages for content management. WordPress, Joomla, some others too. I settled on WordPress. The current site is a bit like a Blog so I thought WordPress would fit. And I saw some really neat plugins that will allow me to integrate a picture manager – Gallery2 – into WordPress to make things (I hope) easier to maintain and update. Good intentions I guess.
Also, I wanted to move our data from the current web server – a Sun UltraSparc 5 workstation with a measily 9gb of storage – to a “new” UltraSparc 10 with a whopping 27gb of storage and the ability to add additional devices. Well, This has proven to be quite a chore and time-sink…
I have been working on setting up the new Ultra-10 with Solaris 10 as a Solaris, Apache, MySQL, PHP (SAMP) server. Not an easy thing. I found some great information on the Sun BigAdmin website that has some guidance and procedures for setting up the SAMP that you can see here.
I started out by installing a new Solaris 10 version – that I downloaded from Sun for free. Just had to register first.
Then I configure a Solaris virtual environment on my laptop – to test the install process, configuration, and troubleshooting. This had to be my best idea. I have been able to work on the configuration/setup without ssh’ing to my Solaris box.
I will be adding more here – on the progress – forwards and back on this task. Right now I have the base system installed and am following the instructions from BigAdmin. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Have fun!
Greg.
