Those Lazy Days of Summer

Ahhh Vacation! I took a week off to enjoy some time at home. It’s been a nice break and I have enjoyed the extra time at home with Nancy and Scott. And I don’t miss the driving and commuting. The home web blog is running now and I have been making some updates. The weather has been great considering it’s mid-August. Will be back again soon with some other updates.

Have Fun!

Cut and Print

Well, the new wordpress based site is up and running.  I learned a lot from this excersise.  Now I can setup a Solaris SAMP and install/configure WordPress in about 2hrs.  Not including the installation of the O/S on the box.  I have one thing to say – RTFB – that’s it.  The information is in the documentation.  But you have to REALLY READ it.

Have Fun!

Partial Success with the new installation

I have completed the setup of our SAMP server (Solaris, Apache, MySQL, PHP)  It is all up and working.  And I added some pictures using a small gallery viewer.  Not so slick yet.  Still a bit of work to do.  My final configuration will be using Gallery2 for displaying pictures.  And that will require installation of the Gallery2 product and proper set up of the WordPress plugin for Gallery2.  To see the blog that is under development click HERE.  Take a look and leave a comment.

Until then – Have Fun!

Frustrating Solaris 10 – Arrgh!

I’ve been working on revamping our family website. You can see the current web site on the blogroll on the right. The current one is a bit unorganized. I looked at several different GNU packages for content management. WordPress, Joomla, some others too. I settled on WordPress. The current site is a bit like a Blog so I thought WordPress would fit. And I saw some really neat plugins that will allow me to integrate a picture manager – Gallery2 – into WordPress to make things (I hope) easier to maintain and update. Good intentions I guess.

Also, I wanted to move our data from the current web server – a Sun UltraSparc 5 workstation with a measily 9gb of storage – to a “new” UltraSparc 10 with a whopping 27gb of storage and the ability to add additional devices. Well, This has proven to be quite a chore and time-sink…

I have been working on setting up the new Ultra-10 with Solaris 10 as a Solaris, Apache, MySQL, PHP (SAMP) server. Not an easy thing. I found some great information on the Sun BigAdmin website that has some guidance and procedures for setting up the SAMP that you can see here.

I started out by installing a new Solaris 10 version – that I downloaded from Sun for free. Just had to register first.

Then I configure a Solaris virtual environment on my laptop – to test the install process, configuration, and troubleshooting. This had to be my best idea. I have been able to work on the configuration/setup without ssh’ing to my Solaris box.

I will be adding more here – on the progress – forwards and back on this task. Right now I have the base system installed and am following the instructions from BigAdmin. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Have fun!
