Flying Near Front Royal VA

What a beautiful day.  Flew down the valley towards Front Royal.  Saw an eagle soaring.  And a few sailplanes gently sailing along.  It was a bit bumpy.  But the thermals are why the eagles are there – both the feathered and the human.

What a view

Frog in the Pond

We have a frog in our garden pond.  Not sure where he/she came from.  Likes to sun on the lily pads.  A bit shy though – jumps back in the water when you get too close.  I was able to snap a picture using the 10x zoom with my camera.  Came out kinda nice – looks like something from National Gedeographic (Geographic for others – 🙂  )  The fish don’t seem to mind him being there.

Here’s the shot I took –

Interesting Little Thingy – The First Mouse

I’m going to start adding Interesting Thingys – mostly geek stuff of interest.

For all you computer users here’s one that may interest you –

To start this off – Today’s  interesting little thingy was found on the Stanford.edu website, which showcases the “first” computer mouse. As you can see, from the pictures below, it is a bit clunky looking.  I think we’ve come quite a ways from this original lethal weapon (blunt instrument?) look.

Clicking on either of the pictures (or hyperlink above) will take you to Stanford University’s page, where you can check out the pet-rock/door-stop/computer-mouse for yourself, as well as view the original schematics.

I really wish I could get my hands on one of those; if only for self-defense

Have Fun!

Greg.

This is not a pet rockThe original and still the best

Bathroom Update – Part Deux

The bathroom project is about ready to wrap up. Final paint and fixtures went in last weekend. Good day to do it with the rain and all we have lately.

Just have some minor paint holidays to fix. And I have to cut and install the door threshold.

Added a New GPS to the Car

After a lot of searching and research I found a really good deal on a GPS for the new car.  I got a refurbished TomTom One XL from Amazon.com.  $98 with free shipping.  I am really pleased with the unit.  I looked at a Magellan 4250 first.  Tried it out but it simply was too much like work to use it.  Yeah it had bluetooth connectivity for my iPhone, and live traffic updates – but the Bluetooth seemed to check out unexpectedly a few times requiring a hard reset.  And the traffic was a bit pricey.  Magellan gives you three months free then wants to hit you $39+ for a year subscription.   I got the same traffic service on the TomTom by just adding the TMC Traffic option for a free year then $19.95 for renewal.  Also, the maps on the Magellan 4250 were quite out of date.  They still had our street as the old name and wanted $79.00 for the next map update.  TomTom gave me an instant map update for free which is included in the purchase price – and the maps were really up to date.

The TomTom One XL

Here is the TomTom in action.  You can see the traffic status on the right side of the screen.

I highly recommend this unit.  The live traffic updates have really been great for getting around the DC metro area traffic problems.  Has saved me a bunch of time.  I have learned to just punch the “avoid all delays” on the traffic status screen and follow the directions.  Gets you right around the mess.
