How to Destroy and Rebuild a Bathroom

I’ve been remodeling the upstairs bathroom for the past couple of weeks.   Started last week by taking three days of vacation to destroy the and demolish the bathroom.  LOTS of work to get that done.  Here are some hints:

Get and use knee pads!  By the end of the first day my knees were TOASTED!  $8 at The Home Depot – well worth it.

It’s always going to take more than you think – If you haven’t done this too much – you will be surprised how much is involved.  Allow plenty of time.

When we busted up the floor – Greg helped A Lot – we found that the original flooring was set on 1/2″ of concrete with a wire mesh below.  It took plenty of back and arm to break it up.  And made a bunch of dust.  Have face mask filters available.

Here are some pictures of the process from break up to tile laying that I took with my iPhone camera.

I’ve GOT to keep up with this!

I really should add entries more often.  Geez – it’s been since August 2008!  A lot has happened since then.  Summer is over, we are deep into winter – and we have a new Prez.

Guess I could add entries for everything that has happened.  Nah, let’s just plug along.

I will try to be better at this.  Meanwhile – check the weather on my web site.  That is the project that takes most of my time.  http://www.Tuscawilla-Weather.org

Have fun!

Time flies when you’re having fun!

Man – this month is flying by. It’s the end of September already! Wow – Seems time goes faster as we get along in years. Did some fun stuff in the last few weeks. Octoberfest at the Bavarian Inn – Shepherdstown was fun. Scott had a band competition and senior night at the football game. Can’t believe he’s a senior already and looking at college.

You can see some of the pictures on the family site. See the link in blogroll or in the previous post.

Well – see you again soon.

Have Fun!

Partial Success with the new installation

I have completed the setup of our SAMP server (Solaris, Apache, MySQL, PHP)  It is all up and working.  And I added some pictures using a small gallery viewer.  Not so slick yet.  Still a bit of work to do.  My final configuration will be using Gallery2 for displaying pictures.  And that will require installation of the Gallery2 product and proper set up of the WordPress plugin for Gallery2.  To see the blog that is under development click HERE.  Take a look and leave a comment.

Until then – Have Fun!

Frustrating Solaris 10 – Arrgh!

I’ve been working on revamping our family website. You can see the current web site on the blogroll on the right. The current one is a bit unorganized. I looked at several different GNU packages for content management. WordPress, Joomla, some others too. I settled on WordPress. The current site is a bit like a Blog so I thought WordPress would fit. And I saw some really neat plugins that will allow me to integrate a picture manager – Gallery2 – into WordPress to make things (I hope) easier to maintain and update. Good intentions I guess.

Also, I wanted to move our data from the current web server – a Sun UltraSparc 5 workstation with a measily 9gb of storage – to a “new” UltraSparc 10 with a whopping 27gb of storage and the ability to add additional devices. Well, This has proven to be quite a chore and time-sink…

I have been working on setting up the new Ultra-10 with Solaris 10 as a Solaris, Apache, MySQL, PHP (SAMP) server. Not an easy thing. I found some great information on the Sun BigAdmin website that has some guidance and procedures for setting up the SAMP that you can see here.

I started out by installing a new Solaris 10 version – that I downloaded from Sun for free. Just had to register first.

Then I configure a Solaris virtual environment on my laptop – to test the install process, configuration, and troubleshooting. This had to be my best idea. I have been able to work on the configuration/setup without ssh’ing to my Solaris box.

I will be adding more here – on the progress – forwards and back on this task. Right now I have the base system installed and am following the instructions from BigAdmin. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Have fun!

Hello world!

Or for the more technical:

#include <stdio.h>

main()

{

     printf(“Hello World!\n”);

}

Yup – that’s it.  The first program every technogeek learns for the C programming language.  Just the basics.  Shows how to get something written, compiled, and run in the C Language.  Well the BLOG is a bit new too.  And somehow people need to know what it takes to get something out of this medium.  So I figured a start with the basics from a techno-geek’s point of view might help.

Let’s see where this goes.
